WHO ARE WE?
We are Black Homeschoolers of Central Florida, Inc., a 501(c)(3) Non-Profit Organization based in Volusia County, Florida. We are a support group for black homeschooling parents in the Greater Central Florida area, all counties in Florida, and beyond. Families reach out to us for advice and information all across the United States and across the oceans.
We get this question often. Why have you been so bold as to name your organization Black.....? The name itself lets black families know that they are not in this alone, that there is a place where they can belong. This village is definitely necessary and that is why it was established. More often than not, we are the only black family in homeschooling groups and on trips, and that can sometimes be lonely. Having this group gives us a connection and the support we need to navigate on this homeschooling journey. It also increases the number of familiar faces we see as we join in on other homeschooling activities. Having this village helps our children understand that homeschooling is not only for white families.
Of course we do! The homeschooling community is huge, and we are all here to help one another, share information, and learn and grow together. We host special classes and events throughout the year for all homeschooling families and our doors are open if any homeschooling family needs information or advice about homeschooling. Families that have adopted black children or have bi-racial children have found our village to be welcoming.
DO WE HAVE SOME EVENTS THAT ARE SPECIFIC TO BEING BLACK?
Yes, absolutely! We believe in celebrating our cultural heritage. We are black people so who we are is naturally going to be incorporated in everything we do. We also partner with black businesses and career professionals so that our children see themselves reflected in a variety of career fields.
We don’t limit ourselves into thinking there is only black and white based subjects. The world is our classroom and our minds are open to all that was created. The learning for us and our children exceeds limitations.
We are not a school, we are a support group! However, we do offer supplemental classes, tutoring, and a college preparatory program for youth and parents that need that extra help, but the bulk of the teaching is definitely left up to the parents. This educational programming enhances what the parents are already teaching their children on their own. We partner with the 4-H program and join together on many events, along with other homeschooling groups. Parents have to research, study, and figure out what curriculum or ways they want to teach their own child specific to their child and family needs. Group members offer what has worked for them, but we in no way tell you what to do. You will have to figure out what works best for you and your family. We are inclusive and are open to suggestions on trips, classes, or guests.
